About the Artists

cropped-10155570_264234103749150_7617994291951915480_n.jpgJoanna Bond (lead artist) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in New Quay, west Wales specialising in ceramics, singing, performance art, and capoeira.

Since graduating in ceramics and glass at Plymouth College of Art in 1997, she has worked as a potters assistant, as a tutor and on community art projects in Cardiff. After moving to West Wales in 2008 she has been developing a variety of ceramic work at her studio including tiles, espresso cups and jugs.

Her work looks at relationships and connections with the natural world and other people, and how creative activity itself connects individuals both to nature and to each other.

“I have been practicing both side by side all my life from choirs to performing live improvised sets in both movement and singing. I trained in Ballet dancing at a young age and currently in my tenth year of capoeira a Brazilian martial art.”

In 2011 her first solo exhibition was a response to the hedgerows being cut before the wild flowers had chance to set seed. Joanna combined disciplines of ceramics and song, and also collaborating with a surrealist practitioner to create a game, “a happening” within the exhibition space.

Joanna is currently on a creative journey to connect the different artistic disciplines through collaboration with other artists and to create artworks which are experiential rather than objects.

_MGH3095Jacob Whittaker lives and works in Cardigan, Ceredigion. A committee member of the Rhôd Artist’s Group and co-founder of sonic arts group GWRANDO and Capel Y Graig art space, work includes sound and video installation, as well as documentary film for artists, local groups and community organisations.

Since 2003 his work has explored themes of nostalgia and memory using found objects and consumer equipment. Works embrace the restrictions and idiosyncrasies of broken machines and degraded media, and explore ‘failure’ as a compositional device, challenging ideas of aesthetic value. Installations created using found objects often become performance spaces, examining boundaries between music performance and performance art.

CeriPicCeri Rhys Matthews is a musician of sorts. he mainly plays traditional and newly created dance melodies and song airs from south and west Wales. He received a fine art training in painting as a young man, which has acted as a blueprint for his life and work. Gradually the paint brush was replaced by other instruments until he settled on the wooden flute as a means of drawing. By using a narrative music from a specific geography as a framework for his tuneful drawings he tries to remove himself as a central ego working in social and historical isolation. In his work he seeks to celebrate the fabric of the lives of ordinary people, living and dead, by repeating their anonymous art and using it as a springboard to do absolutely anything he fancies.

PeterPeter Stevenson ‘I was born and brought up in South Lancashire though spent much of my childhood amongst the choughs and jackdaws, bracken and adders, steamy mists and tempests of Pen Llyn, Cymru. I studied illustration at Manchester Art College, then Folklore postgraduately at Leeds University. Since then, I’ve been illustrating books and wandering the woods, producing many books of Fairy Stories and Nursery Rhymes for Ladybird Books, books by well known authors for Hodder and Stoughton, childrens books for the National Trust, many books of folk tales and Puppet Theatres for Fernleigh Books, and most recently finished my first book in the Welsh Language, called Oes Ben Tylwyth Teg…..all of these and many more can be seen in the Gallery. I have lived the last many years between the trees and the seashore in mid Wales with some spiders and too much chocolate….’
